Chapter History

Community Blood Drives Hard At Work The Greensboro Chapter of the American Red Cross received its charter on April 20, 1917, and since that time has performed as an integral part of the American Red Cross. The chapter is part of a non-profit organization made up of more than 700 chapters which are governed by a national volunteer board. Committees oversee the programs of the chapter and utilize direct service volunteers to perform the ongoing functions. The paid staff of the chapter, led by the Executive Director, compliments the work of the volunteers by providing continuity, support and guidance.
The Greensboro Chapter is one of 100+ regional chapters around the country. As a regional chapter, Greensboro provides assistance and oversight to its community chapters, which include:

The National Headquarters of the American Red Cross is located in Washington, DC. The governing body of the corporation, the Board of Governors, consists of volunteers from all over the country. The governing body is vested with all powers of government, direction and management of the corporation.

Here are some important dates in the history of the Greensboro Chapter:

1881 Clara Barton founds the American Association of the Red Cross.

1900 & 1905 American National Red Cross is chartered by the Congress of the United States to provide Disaster Services and Services to the Armed Forces.

1917 Guilford Battle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution files an application with the National Headquarters for a local chapter. Greensboro Chapter of the American Red Cross is chartered. Robert D. Douglas is named Chapter Chairman. Chapter volunteers prepare ditty bags for soldiers. Initial First Aid course is taught at Blue Bell Manufacturing Company.

1918 Service to the Armed Forces continues, first Disaster Relief is provided.

1923 First Lifesaving classes held when Commodore Longfellow, National Founder of Services came to Greensboro.

1928 First specially trained laymen eligible to teach First Aid - formerly taught only by physicians.

1936 Tornado strikes Greensboro, killing 17 and injuring 121 people - 644 cases aided. Red Cross Disaster Relief is $104,608 - $62,140 donated locally.

1939 The Van Noppen property, located at the corner of Friendly Avenue and Eugene Street (406 W. Gaston) becomes first Chapter House in Greensboro.

1942 1st First Aid Instructor Mobile Unit organized.

1947 Greensboro Chapter moves to 301 North Davie Street, first house owned by the Chapter. Blood Services is organized in Greensboro, as Greensboro Academy of Medicine requests Blood Donor Registry Program.

1948 Blood Services Carolina Region is formed. 4,000 volunteers have blood typed for registry in March. In June, 49 volunteer blood donors give blood.

1950 2,400 Kit bags made for servicemen stationed in Korea.

1951 Cone Mills is first business to sponsor a bloodmobile with 302 donors. A & T State University is first school to sponsor blood drive.

1956 Greensboro Chapter relocates to 1100 North Church Street, the first facility in the state designed to house a chapter of the Red Cross. Chapter joins what is now the United Way of Greater Greensboro.

1961 Gray Lady Volunteer Service organized for Wesley Long Hospital. Chapter hosts North Carolina State Red Cross Conference.

1966 1,186 Holiday Ditty bags filled for servicemen in Vietnam. Sears Catalog sets community record for blood donors - 612 in one visit.

1967 Greensboro Chapter celebrates 50th Anniversary. Active services include: blood disaster, military, international social services, nursing, first aid, water safety, youth and volunteers.

1985 Testing of all blood donations for the AIDS virus begins.

1986 Greensboro Chapter collects over 1,700 units of blood, the most blood ever collected at one site in one day.

1989 Blood Services Carolinas Region opens fixed blood collection site at 3405-A West Wendover Avenue. Greensboro Chapter responds to Hurricane Hugo. Chapter leadership begins planning for a single acility to house all current services.

1991 Blood Services Carolinas Region emphasizes collections, including pheresis, at fixed blood sites. Greensboro residents must travel to Winston-Salem to participate in pheresis donations.

1992 Greensboro Chapter marks 75th year in community. Site selection committee is convened for a new chapter facility.

1993 Capital Campaign Committee is formed.

1994 - 1996 $1.6 million dollars is raised during the Greensboro Chapter's Capital Campaign.

1995 Greensboro Chapter and blood collection facility relocate to 1501 Yanceyville Street. February 25, 1996 Building dedication is held and blood center named in honor of the Nussbaum family, for their voluntary and monetary commitment to the Greensboro Chapter and the community.

1996 National disaster relief operations headquarters for DR202, Hurricane Fran, located in Greensboro. Guilford County population is 366,508.

1997 Chapter marks 80th year in the community.

1999 The combined wind and rain of Hurricanes Dennis and Floyd devastates Eastern North Carolina. The Greensboro Chapter helps those affected with volunteers and donations from our community.

2000 Youth Coordinator hired, first person designated to solely work with Youth Program.

September 11, 2001 More than 1,000 people throughout the community flock to the Greensboro Chapter to help after the terrorist attacks with donations of time, money and blood. The chapter collected 1800 units in the week following 9/11. One day collection high was 247 units.

October 2002 Chapter becomes pilot for Learning Management System (LMS).

March 2003 Triad Treats for Troops is launched and thanks to donations from throughout the community, Greensboro Chapter sends more than 1,000 boxes of items to military members serving overseas.

April 2003 Double red-cell collection begins, Greensboro Chapter selected as the pilot site.

April 2004 Chapter is first in NC as early adopter of Alliance for Technology Linking All Services

May 2004 Greensboro Chapter surpasses blood goal a record 37 consecutive months.

May 2004 The purchase of a mobile kitchen ensures that the Greensboro Chapter and our community are better prepared in times of emergency, thanks to two anonymous donations.

September 1, 2004 Randolph County becomes a Certified Service Delivery Unit (CSDU) to the Greensboro Chapter.

December 14, 2004 40th Anniversary WFMY Holiday Blood Drive

February 1, 2005 Greensboro Chapter takes responsibility for National Lowe's Home Improvement Contract, which coordinates the health and safety training for all Lowe's stores in U.S. and Canada.
