Blood Facts
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. About 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood, but only 8 percent of those eligible actually donate. The American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region must collect at least 1,600 units of blood and platelets each weekday to meet the needs of patients in approximately 103 hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the region.
Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, in generally good health, and at least 110 pounds. Blood can be donated every 56 days. To schedule an appointment to donate or learn more about giving blood, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or log on to www.redcrossblood.org
